Molas are the artwork of the women of the Kuna Indians, and this art has been handed down from mothers and grandmothers to young girls for centuries. To construct the colourful textiles the artists take several layers of cloth, and make their designs by cutting the material down to the desired colour. Then the designs are folded under and hand-sown into place. Designs may include interpretations of events in everyday life, history, or simply objects seen in a normal day in the island and coastal paradise they call home. Items such as seashells, birds, fish, boats, fisherman or turtles are frequently represented in Mola designs and are used in the clothing worn by the Kuna women. The Mola artist may also be inspired by stories and images etched in their mind from the mythical past or prehistoric times. Molas are unique pieces. Each design is a one-of a-kind original, fully conceived by their authors who both design and sew them.

The shoes, bags, belts and other products constructed using Mola textiles are done so with care and respect for the artistry and tradition of the Kunas.
